Accepted Name
zeaxanthin epoxidase
Alternative Name(s)
zea-epoxidase
Reaction catalysed
all-trans-zeaxanthin + 4 H(+) + 2 O2 + 4 reduced [2Fe-2S]-[ferredoxin] <=> all-trans-violaxanthin + 2 H2O + 4 oxidized [2Fe-2S]-[ferredoxin]
Comment(s)
  • Active under conditions of low light.
  • Along with EC 1.23.5.1, this enzyme forms part of the xanthophyll (or violaxanthin) cycle, which is involved in protecting the plant against damage by excess light.
