ID 1.1.1.307 DE D-xylose reductase [NAD(P)H]. AN D-xylose reductase. AN xylose reductase. CA (1) NAD(+) + xylitol = D-xylose + H(+) + NADH. CA (2) NADP(+) + xylitol = D-xylose + H(+) + NADPH. CC -!- Xylose reductases catalyze the reduction of xylose to xylitol, CC the initial reaction in the fungal D-xylose degradation pathway. CC -!- Most of the enzymes exhibit a strict requirement for NADPH (cf. CC EC 1.1.1.431). CC -!- However, a few D-xylose reductases, such as those from Neurospora CC crassa, Yamadazyma tenuis, Scheffersomyces stipitis, and the CC thermophilic fungus Chaetomium thermophilum, have dual cofactor CC specificity, though they still prefer NADPH to NADH. CC -!- Very rarely the enzyme prefers NADH (cf. EC 1.1.1.430).
