ENZYME entry: EC 1.7.2.7

Accepted Name
hydrazine synthase
Reaction catalysed
3 Fe(III)-[cytochrome c] + H2O + hydrazine <=> 3 Fe(II)-[cytochrome c] + 2 H(+) + NH4(+) + nitric oxide
Comment(s)
  • The enzyme, characterized from anaerobic ammonia oxidizers (anammox bacteria), is one of only a few enzymes that are known to form an N-N bond (other examples include EC 1.7.1.14 and EC 4.8.1.1).
  • The enzyme from the bacterium Candidatus Kuenenia stuttgartiensis is heterotrimeric and contains multiple c-type cytochromes.
