ENZYME

ENZYME entry: EC 2.1.1.203

Accepted Name
tRNA (cytosine(34)-C(5))-methyltransferase
Reaction catalysed
cytidine(34) in tRNA precursor + S-adenosyl-L-methionine = 5-methylcytidine(34) in tRNA precursor + H(+) + S-adenosyl-L-homocysteine
Comment(s)
  • The human enzyme is specific for C(5)-methylation of cytosine(34) in tRNA precursors.
  • The intron in the human pre-tRNA(Leu)(CAA) is indispensable for the C(5)-methylation of cytosine in the first position of the anticodon.
  • It is not able to form 5-methylcytosine at positions 48 and 49 of human and yeast tRNA precursors.
  • Formerly EC 2.1.1.29.
