ENZYME

ENZYME entry: EC 2.3.1.135

Accepted Name
phosphatidylcholine--retinol O-acyltransferase
Alternative Name(s)
lecithin retinol acyl transferase
lecithin-retinol acyltransferase
lecithin--retinol acyltransferase
retinyl ester synthase
Reaction catalysed
a 1,2-diacyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine + all-trans-retinol--[retinol-binding protein] <=> a 2-acyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine + an all-trans-retinyl ester + apo--[retinol-binding protein]
Comment(s)
  • A key enzyme in retinoid metabolism, catalyzing the transfer of an acyl group from the sn-1 position of phosphatidylcholine to retinol, forming retinyl esters which are then stored.
  • Recognizes the substrate both in free form and when bound to cellular-retinol-binding-protein, but has higher affinity for the bound form.
  • Can also esterify 11-cis-retinol.
