ENZYME

ENZYME entry: EC 2.7.11.34

Accepted Name
NEK6-subfamily protein kinase
Reaction catalysed
  • ATP + L-seryl-[protein] <=> ADP + H(+) + O-phospho-L-seryl-[protein]
  • ATP + L-threonyl-[protein] <=> ADP + H(+) + O-phospho-L-threonyl-[protein]
Comment(s)
  • Requires Mg(2+).
  • NEK6 subfamily kinases are present in animals, though lost in insects, and include human NEK6 and NEK7 and C. elegans nekl-3.
  • They are activated in mitosis by phosphorylation by NEK9, and phosphorylate cytoskeletal proteins including EML4, KIF11A and KIF14. In C. elegans, nekl-3 is involved in clathrin-mediated endocytosis.
  • In peptide arrays, NEK6 prefers to phosphorylate Ser residues, with hydrophobic residues at -2 and +1 and charged residues at -1, -2 and +2.
