ENZYME entry: EC 3.2.1.228

Accepted Name
funoran endo-alpha-hydrolase
Alternative Name(s)
alpha-funoranase
Reaction catalysed
Endohydrolysis of alpha-(1->3)-linkages between 3,6-anhydro-alpha-L-galactopyranose and beta-D-galactopyranose-6-sulfate units in funoran
Comment(s)
  • The enzyme is an endo hydrolase that hydrolyzes the alpha-(1->3) bond in funoran, a polysaccharide produced by red algae of the genus Gloiopeltis.
  • The cleavage point is different from EC 3.2.1.222.
  • The enzyme from the marine bacterium Aquimarina sp. AD1 also cleaves the alpha-(1->3) glycosidic bond between 3,6-anhydro-alpha-L- galactopyranose and beta-D-galactopyranose of agarose (cf. EC 3.2.1.158).
  • The anomeric configuration of the product (configuration retaining or inverting) has not yet been determined.
