  • The enzyme, characterized from the bacterium Escherichia coli, preferentially hydrolyzes inosine triphosphate and xanthosine triphosphate, which are formed by oxidative deamination damage.
  • By hydrolyzing these damaged nucleotides, the enzyme prevents their incorporation into RNA.
