CA   (R)-lactate + ATP + D-alanine = ADP + D-alanyl-(R)-lactate + phosphate.
CC   -!- The product of this enzyme, the depsipeptide D-alanyl-(R)-lactate,
CC       can be incorporated into the peptidoglycan pentapeptide instead of
CC       the usual D-alanyl-D-alanine dipeptide, which is formed by
CC       EC 6.3.2.4.
CC   -!- The resulting peptidoglycan does not bind the glycopeptide
CC       antibiotics vancomycin and teicoplanin, conferring resistance on the
CC       bacteria.
