ENZYME entry: EC 2.1.1.219

Accepted Name
tRNA (adenine(57)-N(1)/adenine(58)-N(1))-methyltransferase
Reaction catalysed
adenosine(57)/adenosine(58) in tRNA + 2 S-adenosyl-L-methionine <=> 2 H(+) + N(1)-methyladenosine(57)/N(1)-methyladenosine(58) in tRNA + 2 S-adenosyl-L-homocysteine
Comment(s)
  • The enzyme catalyzes the formation of N(1)-methyladenine at two adjacent positions (57 and 58) in the T-loop of certain tRNAs (e.g. tRNA(Asp)).
  • Methyladenosine at position 57 is an obligatory intermediate for the synthesis of methylinosine, which is commonly found at position 57 of archaeal tRNAs.
  • Formerly EC 2.1.1.36.
