ENZYME entry: EC 1.1.2.10

Accepted Name
Lanthanide-dependent methanol dehydrogenase.
Alternative Name(s)
Ce(3+)-induced methanol dehydrogenase.
Cerium dependent MDH.
La(3+)-dependent MDH.
Reaction catalysed
Methanol + 2 oxidized cytochrome c(L) <=> formaldehyde + 2 reduced cytochrome c(L)
Comment(s)
  • Isolated from the bacterium Methylacidiphilum fumariolicum and many Methylobacterium species.
  • Requires La(3+), Ce(3+), Pr(3+) or Nd(3+).
  • The higher lanthanides show decreasing activity with Sm(3+), Eu(3+) and Gd(3+).
  • The lanthanide is coordinated by the enzyme and pyrroloquinoline quinone.
  • Shows little activity with Ca(2+), the required cofactor of EC 1.1.2.7.
