ENZYME

ENZYME entry: EC 1.3.1.109

Accepted Name
butanoyl-CoA dehydrogenase complex (NAD(+), ferredoxin)
Alternative Name(s)
bifurcating butanoyl-CoA dehydrogenase
butanoyl-CoA dehydrogenase/Etf complex
Reaction catalysed
butanoyl-CoA + 2 NAD(+) + 2 reduced [2Fe-2S]-[ferredoxin] = (2E)-butenoyl-CoA + 2 NADH + 2 oxidized [2Fe-2S]-[ferredoxin]
Comment(s)
  • The enzyme is a complex of a flavin-containing dehydrogenase component (Bcd) and an electron-transfer flavoprotein dimer (EtfAB).
  • The enzyme complex, isolated from the bacteria Acidaminococcus fermentans and butanoate-producing Clostridia species, couples the exergonic reduction of (E)-but-2-enoyl-CoA to butanoyl-CoA by NADH to the endergonic reduction of ferredoxin by NADH, using electron bifurcation to overcome the steep energy barrier in ferredoxin reduction.
