ENZYME entry: EC 2.1.1.179
| Accepted Name |
| 16S rRNA (guanine(1405)-N(7))-methyltransferase.
|
| Alternative Name(s) |
| Sisomicin-gentamicin methyltransferase. |
| Reaction catalysed |
| S-adenosyl-L-methionine + guanine(1405) in 16S rRNA <=> S-adenosyl-L-homocysteine + 7-methylguanine(1405) in 16S rRNA |
| Comment(s) |
- The enzyme specifically methylates guanine(1405) at N(7) in 16S rRNA.
- The enzyme from the antibiotic-producing bacterium Micromonospora
zionensis methylates guanine(1405) in 16S rRNA to 7-methylguanine,
thereby rendering the ribosome resistant to 4,6-disubstituted
deoxystreptamine aminoglycosides, which include gentamicins and
kanamycins.
