ENZYME entry: EC 3.2.1.217

Accepted Name
exo-acting protein-alpha-N-acetylgalactosaminidase
Reaction catalysed
  • 3-O-[N-acetyl-alpha-D-galactosaminyl]-L-seryl-[protein] + H2O = L-seryl-[protein] + N-acetyl-D-galactosamine
  • 3-O-[N-acetyl-alpha-D-galactosaminyl]-L-threonyl-[protein] + H2O = L-threonyl-[protein] + N-acetyl-D-galactosamine
Comment(s)
  • The enzyme, which belongs to the glycosylhydrolase 31 (GH31) family, is an exo-acting alpha-N-acetylgalactosaminidase that acts on the innermost alpha-GalNAc residues at the core of O-glycans when no other saccharides are attached to it.
  • Unlike EC 3.2.1.49, it is not able to act on blood group A antigen.
