ENZYME

ENZYME entry: EC 4.2.1.140

Accepted Name
gluconate/galactonate dehydratase
Alternative Name(s)
gluconate dehydratase
Reaction catalysed
  • D-gluconate <=> 2-dehydro-3-deoxy-D-gluconate + H2O
  • D-galactonate <=> 2-dehydro-3-deoxy-D-galactonate + H2O
Comment(s)
  • The enzyme is involved in glucose and galactose catabolism via the nonphosphorylative variant of the Entner-Doudoroff pathway in Picrophilus torridus and via the branched variant of the Entner- Doudoroff pathway in Sulfolobus solfataricus.
  • In vitro it utilizes D-gluconate with 6-10 fold higher catalytic efficiency than D-galactonate. cf. EC 4.2.1.6 and EC 4.2.1.39.
