ENZYME entry: EC 2.1.1.357

Accepted Name
[Histone H3]-lysine(36) N-dimethyltransferase.
Reaction catalysed
2 S-adenosyl-L-methionine + a [histone H3]-L-lysine(36) <=> 2 S-adenosyl-L-homocysteine + a [histone H3]-N(6),N(6)-dimethyl-L-lysine(36)
Comment(s)
  • This entry describes a group of metazoan enzymes that catalyze two successive methylations of lysine(36) of histone H3 (H3K36), forming mono- and dimethylated forms.
  • These modifications influence the binding of chromatin-associated proteins.
  • The product can be further methylated to the trimethyl form by EC 2.1.1.358.
  • The yeast SET2 enzyme can catalyze all three methylations (see EC 2.1.1.359).
  • Formerly EC 2.1.1.34.
