  • This activity, which is similar to that of EC 3.1.4.3, has been characterized from mammalian cells.
  • Multiple enzymes have been shown to catalyze this activity, including human sphingomyelin synthase-related protein (SMSr, gene name; SAMD8) and sphingomyelin synthase 1 (SMS1, gene name; SGMS1) (cf. EC 2.7.8.27).
  • Minor activity was also observed by sphingomyelin synthase 2 (SMS2, gene name; SGMS2).
